Preparation and Application of Calcium Alginate-PVA Beads for Cd(II) Ions Adsorption
Pembuatan dan Penggunaan Bulir Kalsium Alginat-PVA untuk Adsorpsi Ion Cd(II)
Abstract
Cadmium is widely used in electroplating, batteries, plastics, and paints. Cadmium is a toxic element for humans, affecting mainly the kidneys and the skeleton. Adsorption is an easy, effective, and inexpensive method for removing metal ions in wastewater. In this research, we have synthesized calcium alginate-PVA beads as Cd (II) ion adsorbent. The adsorbent characterization was carried out using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Determination of the adsorption conditions includes the composition of the adsorbent, pH, contact time, and adsorbent mass. The results showed that the optimum adsorption conditions on adsorbent composition are pH 4, contact time 4 hours, and mass of adsorbent 0.2 grams using a 25 mL volume solution in a batch system. The Cd(II) ion adsorption is followed by the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model.
